Beautiful Buildings but needs some improvements to improve the overall experience
The Roundhouse offers a stunning first impression with its beautifully restored industrial architecture and spectacular waterfront location in charming Beacon NY. Our extended family occupied several rooms in the ‘Mill Building’ during our stay for a wedding event.
The Good:
- Exceptional event space with stunning river views
- Beautiful architectural restoration with high ceilings and exposed brick
- Excellent WiFi throughout
- Good sound insulation between rooms
- Quality bed linens
- Nice complimentary toiletries
- Attractive, design-forward contemporary furniture in the rooms
- Ample parking with good handicap accessibility to main lobby
- Convenient location in the wonderful town hip town of Beacon
The Not so good/could be better:
- Rooms are too dark with inadequate lighting
- Uncomfortable, lumpy mattress and pillows
- Some bathroom issues: low shower pressure (probably restrictors in the shower heads) and impractical barn door bathroom door without handles
- Limited bathroom storage space, needs another shelf for toiletries
- Awkwardly positioned structural posts in rooms
- Non-functioning room safe
- Unmarked/unlabeled phone system, unclear how to use/who to call on hotel staff if help were needed
- Single luggage cart for entire building?
- One evening we returned from dinner and the front desk attendant was fully reclined back in her chair, eating dinner, the smell of weed was unmistakable and she was obviously stoned. While she was pleasant the level of casualness would have been inappropriate for any hotel, let alone one positioning itself as a more premium destination.
Additional Notes:
- Restaurant food is adequate but unmemorable
- Winter walkway maintenance needs significant improvement. Was treacherous especially for the elderly and women in heels attending the wedding event. It had lightly snowed the day before, someone was hand shoveling and spot treating areas with a push salt spreader but most of the parking lot was untreated and the walks and drive had icy patches.
- In-room continental breakfast was a bag hung on each guests door, it contained some excellent muffins along with some truly terrible mini-bagels that were better suited as dog treats. Very good complimentary yogurt and orange juice in mini bar fridge
- Furniture design and placement seems designed to catch knees and toes, and it did. Multiple people reported stubbing their toes on the bed frames. The room with the queen beds was especially prone to this as one of the two beds is quite close to the bathroom entrance
- Full-length mirrors are inexplicably placed inside the dark closet instead of on a wall and with better lighting
Value:
At current prices, the Roundhouse falls a bit short of expectations. While the architectural elements and event spaces are impressive, some of the basic hospitality elements need some attention. Most issues could be resolved with a very modest investment in better lighting, mirror placement, upgraded mattresses and some handles on the barn doors.
Recommendation:
Consider for short stays or events where atmospheric architecture takes priority over comfort. The property has immense potential but needs to address some basic service and comfort issues to justify its premium positioning.
Tips for Future Guests:
- ladies, bring a lighted make up mirror for the table
- Exercise caution on winter walkways
- Pack your own pillows if you're particular about sleeping comfort

Could be amazing with some improvements...management read this!
1. In future remodeling jobs, do not skimp or watch the contractor closely. The light switch was crooked with a large hole into the wall, the floor panels were not even flush to the wall and there were large 5 mm gaps! I have never seen that in any building before! The sink tilts downwards so your soap bar slides into the sink (and no soap holder) . Management should inspect rooms and be careful because water splashes out of the walk-in shower and their wall and tiles are rotting- could lead to mold issues. The actual shower tiles are fine.
2. Imagine being a guest in the room- what would your needs be?
Upon entering my room, the lights would not turn on. After calling the front desk, I was informed that each of the three lights above the bed have three separate switches! They were tiny switched inconveniently behind the bed and side tables. There is a face mirror but now where to put it or plug it in. The sink is large but there is no space to put anything although there is a shelf above the toilet. There is an ironing board but no iron, only a steamer.
3. The breakfast is a pastry delivered in the morning and Natalie's orange juice, and fermiere yogurt are in the mini fridge. Although some people are not impressed by the breakfast set up, if you do continue this way, perhaps ask the guests to pick their one pastry (croissants, bagel, muffin) because I got a nice muffin and mini bagel which was more insulting than if I didn't get he mini bagel at all. Keurig coffee is terrible for the earth and tastes terrible..not worth it IMHO. There are freeze dried coffee choices that are actually delicious, or even a can of free cold brew would be more impressive.
The robes, towels, linens were clean and fresh. The beds were low and didn't have much support when you fall onto them but fine. Front desk staff, lobby bathroom, grounds were nice.
Management needs to decide what is worth it to invest in and how to make a guests stay intuitive and seamless.
I am available as a hospitality consultant. Let me know! xP

Bad breakfast
We ask for more coffee, it took more than half an hour to bring it. If this is important for you don't go to this hotel.
