Badly needs TLC
Sadly I don’t think any maintenance has been carried out in the intervening years. It’s difficult to find a ceiling without wallpaper peeling off the damp patches. Cobwebs are in abundance.
We had been looking forward to a meal in the restuarant. Granted, it was Halloween but we’re unsure if the waitress was dressed as a ghoulish character for the occasion, or if this was the norm. We opted to eat in the bar, as the menu was universal between bar and restaurant. Scampi and chips seemed the only safe option. We sat down to drinks, and felt less than encouraged to have more than one each by the scary barmaid. We left promptly after our meal.
The bed in our room deserves a special mention. Two 3’ beds had been placed together to create a generous sleeping area. It was, however, the most uncomfortable affair. The sprung mattresses were thin, and every spring had its own noisy agenda, aiming to bruise your body at the suggestion of any movement. A restful, comfortable night was far from possible.
The en-suite bathroom smelled of damp, was mouldy and the wallpaper was hanging from the ceiling.
Breakfast was another dismal affair. The breakfast room ceiling was remarkable in its state of neglect. Soggy black pudding, one rasher of bacon, one sausage and a serving of dry scrambled eggs later, we were glad to pack up and leave.
I feel sorry for this grand old building adorned with photographs of royal visits from a bygone era.
Avoid until improved.
