Really nice, but...
The accomodation is great. Basic but spotlessly clean. Not large by any means and the "beer fridge" for bottled water (free) is a nice touch. It also doubles as storage for your continental breakfast if you order one.
The bathroom is way beyond the price paid for the room. It's almost as big as the room itself with a full sized bath with a mixer shower over. No soap or shower gel so bring your own.
Beds were a bit soft for our taste, but that's a personal thing and only our problem.
And it's all at a very competitive price
So what didn't I like?
Well, and really I feel guilty moaning about this, but it just irked me.
We booked a couple of weeks in advance, checked the Cross Swords web site that said restaurant open it 8pm, bar open till 10pm. I emailed the property the day before stating our expected arrival time would be around 8pm. (No reply, but I can cope with that)
We actually arrived at 8.15pm and was surprised to see the place in darkness.
The accomodation stands to the side of the bar/restaurant. 3 letting rooms, a store room and a hairdressers in a shepherds hut. All also in darkness.
So I went to what looked like an entrance only to find it locked. At least I could see some lights inside now. I walked to the front door where I could see a couple of ladies inside cleaning up. I rattled the locked door (with a sign outside saying open till 10pm) and one of the ladies came to the door. I told her I had a room booked and she said to meet her round the back and she'd show me my room. I met her back in the car park and she opened to door to my room stating the key was in the door and to have a nice stay and with that, just like Mr Benn she was gone.
Now we had a lovely room, in a lovely little village but after driving 240 miles we had a bar that was closed 2 hours early. Not even the chance of a packet of crisps.
There was nothing else for it, we drove into Grantham and picked up a bag of chips and a bottle of red from Lidls. Not exactly the de-stressing pint I'd hoped for.
But don't let this put you off. From the outside the pub looks lovely. But if you do book, don't rely on the bar being open if you get there after dark.
I'm looking forward to visiting again. Next time I'll get there earlier and hopefully spend a bit of time in the bar and restaurant.

Bit of an enigma
Imagine our surprise when we went to the bar for our meal at 6pm to find we were the only ones dining. In fact by 6.30pm there were only three tables out of twelve being served and it never got any busier. The menu offered bore no resemblance to the web site - no starters available, about 70% of the mains and only three desserts. Saying that the food, the steak in particular was very well cooked and presented and a bargain at the price. They were also shy of two of the real ales at the bar but the Taylors Landlord was available and was very palatable. Staff were very attentive and friendly throughout
After our meal and a short walk I returned to the bar at 8.45pm to find to my dismay the place in semi darkness and staff cleaning up for the night. I did manage to get another beer but was quite literally last man standing ....
As regards the room it had a very comfortable king sized bed in it,but because of the size of the bed the room was very cramped. However the bathroom was very large by comparison- it did have a full sized bath and we felt that if they just provided a walk in shower then more space could have been found for the bedroom - but I’m not an architect
They do supply breakfast at the establishment, but this has to be taken in your room and is provided in the fridge the night before. The breakfast is quite limited and as there is only one seat in the room not easy to consume unless you sit on the bed.
However the base cost of the accommodation was very competitive and you could not argue on that score - but we felt the additional costs for breakfasts were poor value for money.
This pub is only open three nights a week (Friday-Sunday)and appears to serve mostly locals. Afraid we were quite disappointed with our stay and probably would not return, but obviously ours is a subjective view and others may love the place ..... on the plus side the cost is very cheap for both evening meal and accommodation
