Incredible North Kerala Experience

While we haven’t yet had the pleasure of a stay at Bekal Muliyar Homestay, though we hope to soon, we did have a great adventure with Mohan Kumar during an outing arranged by ART-M. That day trip was honestly a highlight of life, overflowing with Kerala adventures that we could never have known about otherwise. Mohan is the Vice President of ART-M, an organization promoting responsible and experiential tourism in Malabar. Their motto is ‘explore the unexplored’ and that is exactly what we did and it was thrilling. Our first stop was at a temple dedicated to turtles and surrounded by sacred groves, a fantastic place! We were already happy and enjoying the scenery and culture, but we became astounded by our next stop, at Greenhills Thonikadavu. This is a huge private property with untouched vistas that I could never have imagined before that moment. We were taken on a walk with the owner, who had us smelling and tasting all the natural Ayurvedic plants. He also showed us how to make hats and bags from various plants and bamboo. Totally fun! As we walked, we crossed streams, tried to enter a narrow cave but got too claustrophobic though it was exciting till then, saw waterfalls and then got to swim in the biggest one and experience the pounding of the water. Spectacular! We took a rest with blue tea and bananas and then it was time to move on to the next place though we could hardly bear to leave. But more phenomenal experience awaited. The next homestay was also a magnificent private property, a completely organic farm, bordering untouched forest. We were treated to a delicious organic lunch, with incomparable quality ingredients and phenomenal cooking skill, that makes my mouth water to remember! Then we all took a walk on the small forest path down to the river which half the year is dammed up for boating and other water activities, so we’re going back! Joining us was another member of ART-M, Mohan Kumar, not just VP, but known especially as the storyteller. He regaled us with fascinating stories of nature, history and mythology, keeping us thoroughly entertained while on such a gorgeous walk. Again, we were heartbroken to leave but by now dusk was falling. We had a parting cup of tea and took pictures to remember an unbelievable day, packed full of new and incredible sights, warm and lovely hosts, great stories and information and a spontaneously arising big love of northern Kerala. We are already planning our return including a stay at Bekal Muliyar to experience rare and precious untouched nature and to hear more stories about it all!
