Amazing, authentic, friendly, quality.

What an amazing stay and service we had at Top 12 guesthouse at Lalibela Ethiopia. I have been there with my wife and our 5yo kid and hotel was far beyond our expectations. Rooms are big, decoration exceptional and in accordance with the special atmosphere of Lalibela, bathroom functional with hot water all day, very very clean, stunning view over the valley under the town, great service and absolutely safe. It feels more like a local guesthouse than a hotel and it is ran mainly by 2 local people, David and Jordanus (boy and girl). Both of them very easy going, polite, discrete, friendly, fluent in English, happy to get tourists and always available to fulfill your needs. We booked the place directly with them and not via a tour agent. Through them (David) we booked a 2 day guided tour at Lalibela churches and the monasteries out of the town (like Yemrehana Krestos and Aseton). Our guide was Tade, a local official guide, raised and living in Lalibela, very passionate about his job and place, with great knowledge, energy and local connections that can arrange very very authentic experiences (like having prepared coffee and picnic at a local farm house). During those 2 days we spent with him, he never stopped speaking and giving us valuable info not only about the rich history but also about the present social situation and customs in that part of Ethiopia. He made us and the kid feel so welcome and happy. Aaa, let me not forget to mention about the Amhara conflict and the partisans who seem controlling the rural area out of Lalibela, where we also travelled with Tade. Everything is absolutely safe and quite. Nor the presence of the official army in Lalibela is heavy nor the presence of the partisans. There are a few check points of the partisans along the country road, but don't think of any heavy weaponry, guns or fierceful faces. Young, kind, smiley guys, with hardly any rifles, causing no problem or delay to both tourist and local cars (and asking no money). The same for the official army check points. The conflict appears to be bigger in the news than it is in reality. At no point we felt any tension. And of course, the way to go there is with a local Lalibela guide, who knows everyone on both sides. Avoid having a guide coming from Addis, who might feel hesitant to go in the partisans' territory and give a complete experience of all area. David, Jordanus, Tade we thank you so much for the unforgettable experience you gave us. We really appreciate your efforts to provide such comfortable services in such difficult conditions and infrastructure. You are the dream team of Lalibela.

Beautiful hotel

I spent a lovely night in this hotel as I toured the churches. I love the family emphasis of the ownership, the attentiveness of the staff and the beautiful decor in both the lobby and rooms; the view from my balcony was spectacular. The beds were comfortable. There did not appear to be air conditioning, but it was not needed as there was a nice breeze. The location is above the northern cliffs, so it is a 15 minute walk from the main town and the churches, but this was not a problem since tuktuks are readily available and I was using a tour. There is a good restaurant about five minutes away by foot. Lalibela is a very rural town, but this is a beautiful oasis within it.

Excellent stay at Lalibela

Boutique hotel with special character, great view at the valley and friendly owner. The room was spacious, the bed big and comfy, the view spectacular. There was hot water at all times. The breakfast offered and the lunch options were delicious but not many. It also has a small souvenir shop. Quite pricey as also the whole Lalibela.

A magical stay with attentive service and top view

My stay in Top Twelve Hotel was memorable. The hotel is located along a cliff offering the best view on the valley and outstanding sunsets. The breakfast on the terrace was simple, tasty and plentiful with home brewed Ethiopian coffee, omelet, local bread and honey. The hotel is warmly decorated with local colours and furniture.  My room was spacious with a private balcony and soothing view. The room was quiet, bed was comfortable, water pressure was not great but enough to shower with continous hot water. The hotel is at walking distance  from the outstanding Ben Abeba restaurant. Dawit and Yordanos are very nice and responsive hosts. They did their best to make my stay memorable, including the organisation of private guided tours in Lalibela and around.

Lalibela stay October 2024

The hotel was very accommodating! The view in the room was amazing! The art work in the hotel reception was one of a kind. The stay was very pleasant and I would recommend it to every one. The hotel staff were exceptionally helpful and the wifi was working in the room and through out the hotel too. When you are there don’t forget to visit their shop.
