Nice staff, comfortable room, too much noise.

Our room was small but had a comfortable king bed, wardrobe, table, chairs and a small refrigerator. The wi-fi worked well, even enough for us to stream the Australian Open tennis matches. The compact bathroom had no shower curtain, however. The main problem was the noise. First, there was construction in the lobby with drilling and hammering going on all day. It began at 7:30. Second, the location is next to the bus depot so the noise is constant from the outside as well. It was impossible to have a long night's sleep. The restaurant really isn't a restaurant. There is no menu. We are vegetarian and the only thing they had for us for lunch was a rice dish and a cucumber/tomato salad. But, breakfast was lovely, an omelet, bread, tea, jam, water, cheese. The staff is very nice as well. The woman on duty allowed us to cancel our last two nights with only paying the booking.com fee, no argument. She completely understood the noise issue. But we had to change hotels. We simply could not handle the constant noise. There were better rooms, larger and quieter, but we were not offered these when we canceled our second and third nights. As for comments about the lack of sanitary conditions surrounding the hotel, clearly these people are not experienced travelers. We paid no notice to this. It is Djibouti and this is what much of Africa is like, therefore not a surprise and not an issue. As to the lack of hot water, that's the way it is all over. Don't expect more from anywhere else, unless you want to pay five times the price.

Worst location imaginable

The hotel is located in a part of town which is completely unsuitable for foreigners. It faces a square hosting a major bus station, as well as the biggest local bazaar. There are women selling khat just in front of the hotel's door.
Another unpleasant surprise is that you can't pay by card here.
The rooms are spacious and not particularly shabby, but there's no curtain or screen in the shower. There is no hot or cold water - just general water of street temperature, a bit salty, but that's a usual thing for the region, as I understand.
My room was cleaned just once in my four-day stay, and that's after I went to the reception and was told that that's because I was absent all I day and they didn't have a second key for my room. Cleaning meant that my bed was made (without changing the sheets) and towels folded on the bed (not changed; I even had one of mine taken away without returning), probably some floor mopping too.
The worst thing of all is the complete absence of noise isolation. My windows overlooked the square and I felt as if I were sleeping in the street: the people in the bazaar, the car honking, the bus announcer shouting until midnight, the adhaan early in the morning - all this makes it impossible for you to have a good night's sleep. Right now there is some renovation going on in the lobby and in some rooms, which adds to the overall high level of noise in the building.
Breakfast is probably the only thing I can't say anything negative about. A smiling lady will bring you some French bread with peas and omelette or cheese triangles & jam.
To sum up, this flophouse is doing its best to ruin your impression of Djibouti as a city and a country. I wouldn't advise anyone to spend here even one night.

Noise and rudeness

I was given a room on the 3rd floor and a few days I discovered that a megaphone speaker for a mosque was stationed exactly above my room. I couldn't sleep well from the sound of Imam, especially at dawn- the sound was so disrupting and waken me up everyday and was wondering about the source of the sound. When I found out that the speaker was a few centimeters to my room, I went up to complain but one of the workers responded very stupidly: Can't you wait until the Adhan and prayer finished??!!
I told him we're in the hotel not a mosque.
I advise Djibouti visitors not to go to this hotel- there are more decent hotels with less cost.

What a dump

This hotel is situated down a filthy side street off the main local market. After you have been inevitably ripped off by your taxi driver, your shoes will be filthy from the short walk across the rubbish from the cab to reception where you will be greeted by a surly schoolmaamish receptionist.
You will be given a room (if you are lucky you will get the number of rooms as per your booking).
A good night sleep is improbable. The mattresses are so bad it's better to try sleeping on the floor.
The shower has one tap only. The temperature of the water is thus not within the control of the user.
If staying multiple days be prepared for wet towels because the room does not get made up.
Despite the high costs of the nightly tariff you will have to pay cash for your (most unpleasant) stay here.
On the plus side - it is walking distance to the country's single decent supermarket. However it is also metres away from the mosque speakers so you will be loudly called to prayer at all hours.
If this hotel was 5 to 10 US dollars per night that would be fair. But it is rip off as it currently stands.
Also you won't be able to go online as the Wi-Fi is rubbish.

Dirty and dangerous location

The hotel is located on a dirt road that is covered in mud and muck that is deposited in front of the hotel by street vendors located in the street outside. It is generally not in the nice part of town. I was harassed several times when walking to the hotel.
The staff at the hotel was largely useless and have a bad attitude towards guests. The room was not made up in the 3 days that I stayed there. I had to ask 3 times for toilet paper to be put in the room. The phone was broken so I had to walk downstairs to reception each time (the only lift not operational at the time).
The hot water was not working for the three days I stayed there.
I spoke to the owner about some of the matters of concern. He was a really sincere and reasonable person. Unfortunately the staff working under him do not have the same approach to dealing with customers.
